Windows will warn you about the installer

SoftGlaze has no code-signing certificate yet, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen shows a blue warning that says the publisher is unknown. That warning is telling the truth, and it will keep appearing until the installer is signed.

What you’ll see, and what to do

  1. 1. Windows protected your PC, with a “Don’t run” button.
  2. 2. Click More info. It shows the file name and “Publisher: Unknown publisher”.
  3. 3. Click Run anyway if, and only if, the checksum below matches.

Your browser may also warn while downloading, and some antivirus tools flag unsigned installers. Checking the hash is what actually tells you the file is the one we published.

Check the SHA-256 first

Open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and run:

Get-FileHash .\SoftGlaze-Browser-Setup-<version>.exe -Algorithm SHA256

Compare the Hash it prints with the SHA-256 published on this page for that version. Upper or lower case doesn’t matter; every other character does. If they differ, don’t run the file, and tell us at support@softglaze.com.

What happens the first time you open it

An installed app that goes out to the internet on its own should say where. Here is all of it.

    You create a local login

    The first screen asks for a name, an email address and a password. That is the owner of the workspace, stored hashed in the database on your computer. There is no SoftGlaze account.

    It downloads browsers

    Chrome for Testing builds come from Google's own hosts, and Firefox from Mozilla's. The app installs 3 browser versions to start with, and only from an allowlist of those vendor hosts over HTTPS.

    It installs four extensions

    SoftGlaze Screen Recorder, Cookie-Editor, uBlock Origin (MV3), Proxy SwitchyOmega 3 (MV3). They come from the Chrome Web Store's own download endpoint. Only the recorder is enabled.

Nothing is sent to us at any point, because there is no SoftGlaze server to send it to. The full list of outside services the app contacts, and when, is on the security page.

macOS and Linux

Neither is ready, and neither has a date. The honest state of both:

No macOS build exists yet. The app has never been packaged or signed for it, and Apple notarisation is a separate piece of work.

Linux

Not ready

No Linux build exists yet. The browser downloads the app manages are Windows binaries today.
